The Democrats Are the Enemy Too
After today's news of the DNC and NYSBOE agreeing to strike Bernie Sanders's name from the ballot, ostensibly pledging New York's 274 delegates to Joe Biden, I decided to collate my thoughts on the Democratic Party and electoral politics into one post.
Make no mistake, the DNC's move today solidified my view of the organization as one that is antagonistic to the struggle of working people in the United States. I said glibly on Facebook the day Bernie dropped out of the race that, "No, I will not vote for fucking Joe Biden."
I've been asked a few times why I am so vehemently opposed to voting for Biden — not only as an individual choice but advocating that others do the same. Twitter DMs, Instagram mentions, FB messages; "why are you so opposed to people voting for Joe?"
I can list the common answers:
- Biden's history of segregationist legislation that has supported institutional racism in the US
- Biden's refusal to adopt the wildly popular Medicare for All policy, even in the midst of a global public health crisis
- Biden using fascist, racist rhetoric attacking Chinese Americans for the spread of COVID-19 which will exacerbate Yellow Peril Panic and WILL lead to an increase in hate crimes against Asian Americans
- A credible allegation of rape that Biden and his campaign refuse to address and the media refuses to investigate
Knowing all of this it is even more insane to hear the tired argument of harm reduction parroted by establishment democrats and political elites. "If you don't vote for Biden, you're privileged."
The job we have now is to consolidate independent working class power outside of the Democratic Party. Especially considering the nominee that they literally KILLED people for is resorting to being a fascist racist asshole, flanking Trump to the right.
When capitalism is in crisis it falls back on these pillars of fascism to protect its bottom line and the wealth of those who benefit from it the most — fucking over the poor and working class in the process.
Bernie was not nearly far enough left for me, but the fact that the Democratic establishment literally set itself on fire to prevent even the most moderate social democratic policies that would help workers from coming to fruition shows that they are our enemy.
I don't know what to do next. I don't know how to leverage this moment in our favor. You can bet your ass I'm gonna spend as much time organizing with working class people and groups that are also done with the bullshit IdPol tactics of the Democrats who serve the oppressive system of capitalism just as much as the right wing.
However, one of the easiest things to do is not vote for Joe Biden. Give the DNC the message loud and clear that they fucked around and they get to find out.
So, don't vote for Joe Biden. And don't talk to me about privilege. There isn't a lesser evil in this scenario.
